- What vehicles will the VDR work on?
Initially, the VDR will provide coverage for all North American Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury products with the following exceptions:
  • Mercury Villager - VDR support for this vehicle line was provided with B-18 Release (end of Feb. 2002). An optional Adapter (VDR 16 to 14-Pin DLC) will be required for this vehicle. Call 1-800-ROTUNDA to order this Adapter (Rotunda Part Number 078-00339).
  • Mazda - VDR support for Mazda North America was provided with B-18 Release (end of Feb. 2002).

Coverage for other non-North American produced vehicles equipped with Siemens, VW, and Bosch modules are not provided by VDR. At this time it is not known if coverage will be provided for vehicles equipped with these modules.

- Will the VDR work on Medium Trucks (650 and 750)?
VDR does not support any modules on Medium Trucks.

- How many data recordings can I make with the VDR?
The VDR is designed to capture a maximum of 200 seconds of data. The number and length of the recordings is configurable by the technician. The allowable increments are 1 - 200 second recording, 2 - 100 second recordings, 4 - 50 second recordings, or 8 - 25 second recordings. The default setting is 4 - 50 second recordings.

- How many PIDs can the VDR record?
The number of PIDs that the VDR can record is dependent on the vehicle and module/system being tested. For powertrain modules, approximately 35-40 PIDs can be recorded at a time. It is less for other modules. All PIDs on the VDR set-up screen will turn from black to red when the maximum number of PIDs has been exceeded. The number of PIDs on the set-up screen just before the color change to red is the PID limit. If the PIDs are red, the user will have to deselect PIDs until all PIDs turn back to the original black color.

- If I set up the VDR for a specific vehicle, can I use the same configuration test on an identical vehicle?
We recommend that the VDR be configured on the vehicle you plan to test. This will ensure the recordings will be associated with the correct vehicle session that resides on IDS.

- Can I setup my VDR with one IDS and Upload the recording onto another IDS?
Yes, IDS will create a "New Session" if one does not already exist.

- Can I configure a VDR with one version of software on IDS and upload the recording on a later version?
Yes, you can.

- Can I save captured data from the VDR on the IDS?
Yes, upon upload of the VDR data, IDS will ask you to give the recording group a file name.
This file can be viewed at a later time through the playback option. A list of files will be shown when you select the playback tab. These same files can also be transferred to any media device connected to the PC - after the session has been put on hold and the previous sessions screen has been opened. The archiving disk icon on the previous sessions screen will lead you to a list of files that can be selected for any media device connected to the PC.

- What is an Auto-Trigger?
An Auto-Trigger is a PID that can be set to automatically start a VDR recording based on a specific condition being met (also called an event; for example, a misfire occurs). Once the condition has been met (the event occurs), the VDR will mark the event as the trigger point and supply data prior to the event and just after the event (called pre & post trigger data). Pre & post trigger times can be adjusted.

- Can I trigger a recording manually if auto-triggers are set?
Yes, you will always have the ability to trigger a recording manually.

- What is the limit on auto-triggers?
The total number of auto-triggers that the VDR will allow is five (5). The Diagnostic trouble count PID or DTC_CNT will automatically be set by the VDR as an auto-trigger for all recordings. Therefore, the user can only set up to four (4) auto-triggers.

- Can I capture data on the VDR using any module or must I capture data through systems?
VDR can capture data by individual module or by systems.

- If necessary, how will the VDR be updated?
The VDR is designed so it can be updated when necessary through IDS. The technician is alerted when using VDR that a new software upgrade is available. The technician can then perform the update immediately using IDS.

- Will the VDR drain the vehicle battery if it is left connected to the vehicle overnight?
The VDR has an automatic "Sleep Mode" to reduce the drain on the vehicle battery and prevent discharging the battery if left connected overnight.

- Do I have the ability to print data from the playback screen?
Yes, the options tab at the upper right hand corner of the playback screen has the print option. A printer must be connected to the IDS in order for the print option to work.

- Will the Technical Hotline be able to access my VDR recordings to assist in diagnosing the vehicle?
Yes, if IDS has an Internet connection. Place the session that contains the appropriate VDR recordings on Hold, then go to the Previous Sessions and select the Upload Session button along the right panel.

- Can I use my CFR from SBDS on IDS?
No, there are hardware and software interface differences that make the SBDS CFR incompatible with IDS. The VDR also contains hardware to support new vehicles that will be released over the next several years.

- When will the VDR be available?
The VDR is scheduled to be available 3rd quarter 2008

- How do I order a VDR?
Please contact 1-800-ROTUNDA Option #1 for pricing and availability.

- How much does the Vehicle Data Recorder (VDR) cost?
Please contact 1-800-ROTUNDA Option #1 for pricing and availability.

- What is the Warranty on the VDR?
New VDRs purchased from Rotunda carry a 12 month manufacturer's warranty.

- How do I obtain technical support for the VDR?
If you have an issue with your VDR the Technical Information Support (TIS) center provides VDR support by completing a web-based TIS Assistance Request Form. The form is accessed via PTS Technical Hotline
